Hiring a Shopify expert usually costs $25 to $300 an hour, depending on experience and whether you hire a freelancer or an agency. Small fixes run $300 to $2,000, theme customization typically costs $2,000 to $10,000, and a store migration ranges from about $1,500 for a simple store to $50,000 or more for a large catalog with integrations. The quote is only part of the price. The rest shows up later, usually when something breaks.
Dana runs a $6M home goods brand in Columbus. Last spring she decided to move from WooCommerce to Shopify and refresh the theme while she was at it. She collected two quotes. One said $13,500. The other said $4,500 and came with a very friendly profile photo. She picked the second one and felt great about the $9,000 she had just saved.
Launch day went fine until about 2 pm. Then the emails started. Customers couldn't log in. The cart drawer did nothing on iPhones. Google was still sending shoppers to her old product addresses, which now led to roughly 400 different "page not found" screens. Dana messaged her freelancer. His status had switched to "on vacation," which, to be fair, was where Dana wanted to be too.
Fixing it took another developer, three weeks, and most of the $9,000. Her organic traffic took longer to come back.
(Dana is a composite of the founders who call our team after a project like this. Her story is common enough that we could have used real names, but nobody volunteered.)
Here is what Shopify expert work costs, what drives the price, and how to avoid paying for the same project twice.
What a Shopify Expert Actually Does
A Shopify expert is a developer, designer, or agency that builds, changes, or maintains Shopify stores for merchants. The title covers a wide range of skills, which is why prices vary so much. Most work falls into five groups:
Store setup: shipping zones and rates, Shopify Payments and PayPal, your domain and DNS, taxes, and core apps.
Theme customization: changing sections, templates, and Liquid code so the store looks and works the way you need.
Migration: moving products, customers, orders, content, and URLs from another platform. OurShopify store migration work covers all five, including 301 redirects.
Conversion and speed work: finding where shoppers leave and why pages load slowly on phones, then fixing both.
Ongoing maintenance: app reviews, theme updates, test orders, and fixes before they turn into emergencies.
A freelancer who is excellent at setup may be the wrong person for a migration. Matching the person to the job saves more money than haggling over the hourly rate.
Shopify Expert Hourly Rates
Most US brands pay $75 to $250 an hour for an experienced Shopify expert. Lower rates usually come from newer freelancers or offshore developers. Higher rates usually come from agencies, where the hour also pays for a project manager, testing, and someone who answers on a holiday weekend.
Entry level freelancer, $25 to $60 an hour: theme settings, app installs, small styling changes.
Experienced freelancer, $75 to $150 an hour: theme customization, custom sections, most store setups.
Senior specialist, $150 to $250 an hour: complex Liquid work, inventory or ERP integrations, large migrations.
Agency team, $100 to $300 an hour blended: design, development, testing, and project management in one place.
The cheaper hour often takes longer, skips testing on real phones, and leaves nobody responsible after launch. Dana's $4,500 quote was roughly 75 hours at $60. The work needed closer to 150.
What Common Shopify Projects Cost
Project prices depend on catalog size, how much custom code you need, and how many apps and systems have to talk to each other. These are typical ranges for US brands, based on the quotes we see and write.
Project
Typical cost
Timeline
What pushes the price up
Small fixes and tweaks
$300 to $2,000
1 to 5 days
Old theme code, conflicting apps
Store setup
$1,000 to $5,000
1 to 3 weeks
Several markets, custom shipping rules
Theme customization
$2,000 to $10,000
2 to 6 weeks
Custom sections, heavy edits to theme files
Custom theme or full redesign
$10,000 to $40,000+
6 to 12 weeks
Original design, many templates, complex product pages
Simple migration (under 1,000 products)
$1,500 to $8,000
2 to 6 weeks
Messy product data, thousands of URLs to redirect
Midsize migration with redesign
$8,000 to $50,000
8 to 16 weeks
Inventory or ERP sync, subscriptions, wholesale pricing
Shopify Plus replatform
$50,000+
12 to 24 weeks
Several stores, checkout extensions, headless builds
Monthly maintenance
$1,500 to $15,000 a month
Ongoing
Number of apps, hours included, response time
None of these include Shopify itself. According to Shopify's pricing page, plans cost $39 a month for Basic, $105 for Grow, and $399 for Advanced when billed monthly, about 25% less when billed yearly. Shopify Plus starts at $2,300 a month. Paid apps come on top of all of it.
Theme Customization Costs
Theme customization is the most common Shopify project and the one with the widest price range. A few hours covers new colors, a homepage section, or a size chart. A larger job adds custom product templates, a bundle builder, or a cart drawer with upsells.
Two details decide the final bill. First, does the expert build with Online Store 2.0 sections and blocks you can edit in the theme editor, or hard code everything into Liquid files so every future change needs a developer? Second, how much do they edit the theme's core files? Heavy edits make the theme developer's updates hard to install later. Ask about both before work starts.
If your theme has been patched by three developers and nobody can explain half the code, aShopify store redesign often costs less over two years than another round of fixes.
Store Migration Costs
Migration prices swing more than any other project because moving products is the easy part. The work that protects your revenue is harder to see:
Redirects. Shopify uses fixed URL paths like /products/ and /collections/, so almost every old address changes. Each one needs a 301 redirect, which can be bulk imported through URL redirects in the Shopify admin.
Customer accounts. Passwords can't move between platforms, so customers must activate new accounts. A good migration plans the email that tells them.
Data cleanup. Duplicate SKUs, missing variants, and old categories get fixed before import, not after launch.
Apps and integrations. WooCommerce plugins don't come along. Each one needs a Shopify app or a custom replacement, often with a monthly fee.
Quotes that skip these lines look cheaper. Dana's did. A sensible budget also holds back 15 to 20% for surprises found during the project. One timing note: with Black Friday on November 27, 2026, a November launch is a bad idea. Plan migrations for January.
Freelancer, Agency, or In House Developer
Freelancers cost less per hour, agencies cost less per mistake, and an in house developer makes sense once you have 40 hours of steady Shopify work every week. For a brand doing $500K to $20M a year, the choice usually looks like this:
Freelancer: good for clear, contained tasks like a new section or an app setup. The risk is one person with no backup. Freelancers take vacations too, usually the week you launch.
Agency: good for migrations, redesigns, and anything touching the cart or checkout. You pay more per hour, and that hour includes testing, project management, and support after launch.
In house developer: good when you ship changes weekly and need someone who knows the store by heart. You still need outside help for specialist work and for the weeks your developer is out.
The Bill Nobody Quotes You: What Technical Failures Cost
The most expensive Shopify project is the one you pay for twice. No quote includes the cost of a mistake on a live store, so here's a quick way to price it yourself: multiply your daily revenue by the number of days a problem goes unnoticed.
A $6M brand earns about $16,400 a day. Say phones bring in 70% of orders, and a broken cart drawer cuts mobile sales in half for three days. That's roughly $17,000 lost before anyone opens a support ticket. Plug in your own numbers. They are rarely comforting.
Failures We See Most Often
Missing redirects: Google keeps sending shoppers to old addresses that now show error pages. Rankings drop page by page and can take months to recover.
A broken path to checkout: an app conflict or theme edit stops the checkout button working on one device. Desktop tests pass, so nobody notices.
Leftover app code: uninstalled apps often leave scripts in the theme. They slow pages down and sometimes break new features.
Slow mobile pages: every extra script costs shoppers you already paid to bring in. OurShopify speed optimization work cut one client's mobile load time from 4.3 seconds to 1.1 seconds.
An expert who charges more per hour, tests on real phones, maps every redirect, and stays reachable after launch is usually the cheaper choice over a full year.
Hourly, Fixed Price, or Retainer: Which Pricing Model Fits
Hourly: best for small jobs or problems you can't scope yet, like "find out why the store is slow." Ask for a cap so a two hour job doesn't become twenty.
Fixed price: best for migrations and redesigns with a written scope. Read the exclusions. That's where redirects and data cleanup like to hide.
Monthly retainer: best for stores with many apps, frequent campaigns, or a big sales season ahead. OurShopify support and maintenance services work this way, with app reviews, testing, and fixes every month.
How to Vet a Shopify Expert Before You Sign
Ten minutes of questions can save you Dana's three weeks. Work through this list on every call.
Shopify Expert Hiring Checklist
◼️Open two live stores they built on your own phone and add something to the cart. ◼️Ask who does the work, and whether any of it gets passed to someone else. ◼️Get a written scope that names redirects, customer account activation, data cleanup, and app replacements. ◼️Ask how they test: which devices, browsers, payment methods, and discounts. ◼️Ask whether they build with sections and blocks or edit core theme files. ◼️Confirm they work on a duplicate theme, never your live one. ◼️Ask what happens after launch: weeks of support included and how fast they reply. ◼️Confirm you own the code, the theme, and every account they create.
Watch for a few red flags too. A quote with no discovery call. A price far below others for the same scope. A request for your owner login instead of a collaborator access request. A migration quote that never mentions redirects. Any one of these is worth a second opinion.

Pay for the Project Once
Dana's second migration partner charged more than her first. It was also the last one she needed. The redirects were mapped before launch, customers got an email explaining their new accounts, and someone tested the cart drawer on an iPhone before anyone else could.
Price alone won't tell you who to hire. Look for the quote that names the work protecting your revenue, from someone who still answers the phone after launch.
In 2026, Shopify experts charge about $25 to $60 an hour at entry level, $75 to $150 for experienced freelancers, and $150 to $250 for senior specialists. Agencies usually bill $100 to $300 an hour blended, which covers design, development, project management, testing, and support after launch.
A simple migration with under 1,000 products usually costs $1,500 to $8,000. Midsize stores that need a redesign or inventory integrations typically pay $8,000 to $50,000, and Shopify Plus replatforms start around $50,000. Redirects, data cleanup, and customer account activation should appear in the quote.
Most theme customization projects cost $2,000 to $10,000 and take two to six weeks. Small edits like a new section can cost a few hundred dollars. A fully custom theme or redesign usually runs $10,000 to $40,000 or more, depending on design work and the number of templates.
Freelancers cost less per hour and suit small, clearly defined tasks. Agencies cost more per hour but include testing, project management, and backup, which matters for migrations, redesigns, and anything touching checkout. For revenue critical projects, an agency often costs less once fixes are counted.
A retainer makes sense if your store runs many apps, launches frequent campaigns, or has a big sales season coming. Retainers typically cost $1,500 to $15,000 a month and cover app reviews, theme updates, testing, and fixes. Smaller stores with few changes can hire per project instead.
