ChatGPT Ads for Shopify let US stores show sponsored product cards below ChatGPT's answers, sync their catalog through a Shopify app, and track orders with a pixel. The ads reach logged in adults on the Free and Go plans, and you pay per view or per click. For a brand doing $500K to $20M a year, the real question is whether a $3 to $5 click can pay for itself in your store. That depends on your conversion rate, order value, and margin more than on the ad.

This guide covers who sees ChatGPT ads, how targeting and bidding work, what a test costs, how to set up the Shopify app and tracking, and how to decide whether to test now or fix your store first.

Here's a scenario to frame it. It's a Sunday night in early October. Marcus runs a $7M outdoor gear brand in Denver, and he's checking on the business when he should be off. He opens ChatGPT and types the question his customers ask every fall.

"What's the best insulated water bottle for winter hiking under $40?"
The answer is useful. Right below it sits a small card labeled Sponsored, with a photo, a price, and a link. The bottle belongs to the brand he has competed with for five years.

Marcus didn't sleep much that night. He did open a new tab and search "ChatGPT ads," which may be how you got here too.

What ChatGPT Ads Are and Who Sees Them

Parts of a ChatGPT ad shown below a ChatGPT answer

ChatGPT ads are paid placements that appear below ChatGPT's response when a conversation is relevant to what you sell. According to the ChatGPT Ads help center, each ad shows the advertiser name, a small site icon, a title, short copy, an image, and a landing page link. Ads are labeled and kept separate from the answer.

There are three formats a Shopify store should know about:

  • Standard ads: a single ad unit below a response, with one image or several.
  • Product ads from your catalog: Shopify stores can build ads for all products, a single product, or the website, using the product feed synced from the store.
  • Visual ads: a multi image ad shown while ChatGPT generates an image, which disappears when the image is finished. The October 5, 2026 announcement said US testing would begin later that month with a small group of advertisers.

Who sees them

Ads may appear for logged in adults on the Free and Go plans. Plus, Pro, Business, Enterprise, and Edu accounts don't get ads, and accounts identified as belonging to someone under 18 are excluded. Free users can also switch to an ads free option with lower usage limits, and Temporary Chats show no ads.

Ads aren't eligible to appear near sensitive topics such as personal health, mental health, or politics. Health and financial advertisers can still run ads if they meet stricter criteria, but those ads won't show next to sensitive conversations. Political ads aren't allowed.

ChatGPT states that ads don't influence its answers and that advertisers can't shape, rank, or change responses. Paying gets you a placement below the answer, not a mention inside it.

The program has moved quickly. Plans were announced on January 16, 2026, and US testing began on February 9. The self-serve Ads Manager entered beta on May 5 with cost per click bidding, and it has been opening to more businesses gradually since then. New measurement tools and visual ads were announced on October 5.

How ChatGPT Ads Work: Context Hints, Audiences, and the Auction

ChatGPT ads context hints compared with a traditional keyword list

ChatGPT matches ads to the conversation, not to a keyword list. When choosing an ad, it considers the conversation and its intent, your landing page, title, and copy, and the context hints you add to each ad group. If a user has ads personalization turned on, it can also use signals from their broader ChatGPT use, such as past chats and memory. With personalization off, matching is based on the current chat only.

Context hints are short descriptions of the conversations, topics, or terms where your product is relevant. They guide matching, but they aren't exact match keywords and they don't guarantee delivery. For Marcus, hints might be "planning a winter hike or cold weather camping trip," "gift ideas under $50 for someone who hikes," or "insulated bottles that keep drinks hot for 12 hours."

Custom audiences

You can upload customer or prospect lists of email addresses or phone numbers. Per the help center's custom audiences guide, including an audience or adjusting bids for it requires at least 25,000 matched users, and 100,000 or more is recommended. Smaller lists can still be used to exclude people. Bid adjustments range from 0.1x to 10x.

For many stores under $3M a year, exclusion will be the practical use. Leaving out customers who ordered in the last 30 days keeps your budget on people who haven't bought yet.

The auction

The help center describes a relevance weighted, second price auction. A higher bid helps, but an ad that fits the conversation better can beat a larger bid.

Your product data does the targeting

Product ads are built from your product names, images, and details. A product called "The Summit" gives ChatGPT very little to match. "The Summit 32 oz Insulated Stainless Steel Water Bottle" tells it the product type, size, and material, which are the details shoppers mention in their questions.

How Much ChatGPT Ads Cost in 2026

Formula for calculating break even cost per click for ChatGPT ads

ChatGPT ads have no published price list, and you never pay per order. You pick a campaign goal, then pay for either views or clicks:

  • Views: you pay per 1,000 impressions (CPM).
  • Clicks: you pay per valid click (CPC).
  • Conversions: ChatGPT aims your budget at shoppers likely to complete an event such as a purchase. You choose to be billed per 1,000 impressions (oCPM) or per valid click (oCPC). The purchase is what the system aims for, not what you pay for.

The help center recommends a starting maximum bid of $3 to $5 per click. ChatGPT doesn't publish average CPM or CPC figures, so treat any benchmark quoted online as one advertiser's experience. Budgets can be daily or lifetime. Ads Manager enforces a minimum daily budget that varies by currency and shows it when you set the budget. The Shopify app sets budgets in fixed $25 steps.

What a test actually returns

A handful of numbers decide whether a test worked. They get mixed up often, so here's what each one means:

  • Cost per click (CPC): what you pay for one visit.
  • Conversion rate: the share of visits that become orders.
  • Revenue: orders multiplied by your average order value.
  • Return on ad spend (ROAS): revenue divided by ad spend. A ROAS of 2 means $2 in revenue for every $1 spent.
  • Contribution margin: the share of each sale you keep after every cost that comes with an order: product cost, shipping, packaging, payment fees, and any app fees charged per order. It doesn't include ad spend yet.
  • Profit: contribution margin in dollars, minus ad spend.

Here's an illustrative 30 day test: $1,500 in spend, an average CPC of $4 (about 375 clicks), an $85 average order, and a 60% contribution margin. That means $51 of each $85 order is left after product, shipping, packaging, and payment costs, before any advertising. The 60% is an assumption. Your own number may be lower, and a lower margin makes every result below worse, so swap it in.

At a 2.5% conversion rate, that test brings in about 9 orders, $797 in revenue, a ROAS of 0.53, and a loss of $1,022 after ad spend. At a 4% conversion rate, it brings in 15 orders, $1,275 in revenue, a ROAS of 0.85, and a loss of $735.

Both scenarios lose money on the first order. The difference between them comes entirely from what happens after the click, on the product page and at checkout.

To find the most you can pay per click and still break even on a first order, multiply average order value by conversion rate by contribution margin. At $85, 2.5%, and 60%, that's $1.28 per click. A store with a $150 average order, a 4% conversion rate, and a 60% contribution margin breaks even at $3.60, which falls inside the recommended bid range.

If customers reorder, first order math understates the value of a new customer. In that case, compare the cost of acquiring a customer with that customer's revenue over 12 months, using your own repeat purchase data.

How to Set Up ChatGPT Ads on Shopify

Steps to set up ChatGPT ads in a Shopify store

The ChatGPT Ads app is available to all Shopify stores in the US. You'll need permission to install apps in Shopify and to manage the Ads Manager account. The steps below follow the official ChatGPT Ads setup guide for Shopify.

ChatGPT Ads Setup Checklist for Shopify

  1. Install the ChatGPT Ads app in your Shopify admin and click Connect Account.
  2. Choose or create an Ads Manager account with your business name, website, industry, country, currency, and time zone.
  3. Select or create the pixel for Shopify and connect it so store events, including purchases, reach Ads Manager.
  4. Wait for your catalog to sync. Only active, available products appear, and large catalogs take longer.
  5. Click Create Campaign and set the name, budget, optimization event, and targeting.
  6. Pick an ad type: all products, a single product, or your website.
  7. Select products, review the preview, and launch.
  8. Add UTM parameters to your landing page URLs so ChatGPT traffic is easy to find in Shopify reports.
  9. Place a test order and check that it appears in Ads Manager within 24 to 48 hours.

If products don't show up in Ads Manager, check four things. The app should be linked to the correct Ads Manager account, and the feed should have finished syncing. The products should be active and in stock, and the pixel should be connected. Disconnecting the store later stops product updates, and campaigns that depend on the feed may pause.

Tracking Results: The Pixel, Conversions API, and Shopify Analytics

ChatGPT ads track sales through a browser pixel and a Conversions API that sends events from your server, and both feed reports in Ads Manager. The Shopify app connects the pixel for you. Ads Manager reports impressions, clicks, spend, click through rate, average CPC, average CPM, and conversions, along with order sales and ROAS for attributed purchases. The app's results also appear in Shopify Analytics.

Know how the reporting counts before you judge a test. According to the help center's measurement guide:

  • Attribution is last touch. If both a view and a click qualify, the click gets the credit.
  • Click windows are 7, 14, or 30 days. View through credit is either off or one day.
  • Windows change reporting only. They don't change bidding, optimization, or billing.
  • Data arrives at different speeds. Impressions and clicks refresh about every 15 minutes, spend lags 7 to 8 hours, and conversions can take 24 to 48 hours.

Advertisers receive aggregated performance data only. ChatGPT doesn't share chats, chat history, memories, names, email addresses, or precise locations with advertisers.

Early advertiser results

The October 5, 2026 ChatGPT Ads announcement shared three early results, each measured by the advertiser's own measurement partner:

  • A weight management program's attributed cost per acquisition was 15.3% lower than its blended paid search benchmark.
  • A leather goods brand found that 93% of its visitors from ChatGPT ads were new to the brand.
  • A third advertiser saw a statistically significant lift in an incrementality test, with 67% of its extra purchases coming from new customers.

The platform selected these examples, and none of them are Shopify specific. Read them as signs that ChatGPT ads may reach new customers, then test that claim against your own data.

In your first 30 days, track cost per click, conversion rate compared with your store average, cost per new customer, and ROAS against your break even ROAS. To find break even ROAS, divide 1 by your contribution margin. At 60%, that's about $1.67, so every $1 of ad spend needs to bring in about $1.67 in revenue just to cover itself on the first order.

Should Your Shopify Store Advertise on ChatGPT?

Answer these five questions with your own numbers before you set a budget:

  1. Is your break even CPC close to $3 to $5? Use the formula above. If it's well below, a test will probably lose money unless repeat purchases make up the difference.
  2. Do carts turn into orders? Open the conversion rate report in Shopify Analytics and compare sessions that added to cart, reached checkout, and completed checkout. A large drop between cart and order should be fixed before you buy more traffic.
  3. Do your product pages load well on phones? Check the Web performance report in Shopify Analytics for Core Web Vitals on mobile.
  4. Is your category eligible? Products tied to health, mental health, or politics will have limited or no placements.
  5. Can you buy enough clicks to learn something? At 375 clicks and a 2.5% conversion rate, one extra or missing order moves the rate by about a quarter of a point. Small tests produce noisy numbers.

A practical check: if you wouldn't send 400 extra visitors from search ads to a product page today, don't send them from ChatGPT either.

ChatGPT Ads vs. Organic Visibility in ChatGPT

Many founders asking about ChatGPT ads are really asking how to show up in ChatGPT at all. Paying is one route. Appearing in the answer itself is the other, and paid plan users can only find you that way.

On the organic side, Shopify says in its guide to agentic commerce that eligible products in Shopify Catalog are listed in ChatGPT by default for merchants who sell to US buyers. You manage this under Settings, then Sales channels, then Agentic Storefronts. Price, inventory, and description changes in your admin carry over automatically, so accurate product data serves both routes.

Beyond your catalog, answer the questions shoppers ask on your product pages (materials, sizing, delivery times, returns). Check that your robots.txt file doesn't block OAI-SearchBot, the crawler ChatGPT uses for search. Our Shopify SEO and AI search optimization team handles this work, and our post on preparing stores for AI agents covers it in more detail.

What to Fix Before You Spend a Dollar

  1. Product titles. Your feed becomes your ad copy. Make sure your top 20 sellers state the product type, size, and material.
  2. Mobile speed. Every slow page costs you clicks you've already paid for. Start with the Web performance report in Shopify Analytics, then remove unused apps and oversized images. Our Shopify speed optimization service covers deeper theme work.
  3. A landing page that matches the conversation. Someone who asked about winter hiking should land on the bottle, with heat retention and delivery dates visible, not on a homepage built around unrelated promotions.
  4. Checkout friction. Show shipping costs before checkout, make customer accounts optional, and add Shop Pay and phone wallets to the cart.
  5. Tracking. Connect the pixel, add UTM parameters, and confirm a test order appears in Ads Manager. Without that, you can't separate ChatGPT orders from everything else.

Black Friday falls on November 27, 2026. If you want data before the holiday peak, finish store changes by November 13 and start a small test in mid November. If your store needs bigger fixes, a January test with clean tracking will tell you more than a rushed November one. For the rest of your holiday plan, see our Black Friday ecommerce strategy for 2026.

ChatGPT Ads for Shopify: Test With Your Own Numbers

ChatGPT ads give Shopify stores a new way to reach shoppers while they're asking for recommendations. The platform is still in beta, its prices aren't published, and the only results available so far were selected by the platform. A test is reasonable when your break-even cost per click is near the recommended bid range, your tracking works, and your store converts the traffic you already have.

In our scenario, Marcus starts with a $1,500 test. His bottle now has a title that says what it is, and his product page loads quickly on a phone. Before launching, he works out his break even ROAS, so he'll know what the results mean when they arrive.

Book a free discovery call with Proactivo Commerce. We'll review your product pages, tracking, and checkout with you, work out your break even cost per click, and tell you whether to test ChatGPT ads now or fix your store first.

ChatGPT ads are labeled sponsored placements that appear below ChatGPT's answers when a conversation is relevant to an advertiser. Each ad shows a business name, image, short copy, and a link. They reach logged in adults on the Free and Go plans, and ChatGPT states that ads don't influence its answers.

There is no published price list. Advertisers pay per 1,000 impressions or per click, including on conversion campaigns, and never per order. ChatGPT recommends a starting maximum bid of $3 to $5 per click. Ads Manager enforces a minimum daily budget, which varies by currency and is shown during setup.

Yes. The ChatGPT Ads app is available to all US Shopify stores. It connects an Ads Manager account, syncs active products, and connects a pixel that tracks purchases. You can create campaigns inside Shopify and review results in Shopify Analytics and in Ads Manager.

Yes. Shopify lists eligible products from Shopify Catalog in ChatGPT by default for merchants selling to US buyers, managed under Agentic Storefronts in your sales channels. Accurate product data, pages that answer shopper questions, and mentions on other sites all improve your chances, though no store can guarantee placement in an answer.

Multiply your average order value by your conversion rate and your contribution margin, which is what you keep from each order after product, shipping, and payment costs. The result is your break even cost per click. If it's close to the recommended $3 to $5 bid, or repeat orders add real value, a small tracked test makes sense.
